  • Description

    The Caretaker I will provide cemetery maintenance for six cemeteries and will report to the Fort Sill Roads/Cemetery Manager. Duties include preparing for and conducting casketed and cremated interment; maintenance, installation, and care of headstones, markers, and niche covers; and cemetery grounds maintenance.

    Caretakers perform a variety of tasks, such as operating small tractors, and transplanting shrubs, which involve the application of basic trade practices from two or more occupations at the same grade level. Caretakers must be proficient in performing basic techniques from different trade occupations and must have knowledge of and ability to perform all routine lower level cemetery tasks.

    Some tasks require heavy physical effort to complete tasks to include: digging and squaring graves and headstone holes with tools such as pneumatic tampers, picks, and shovels; cut grass with heavy walking-type power mowers; operate hand or gasoline driven pumps to empty water from open graves; and setting up and aligning headstones. In addition, Caretakers learn how to operate garden-type tractors, fertilize plants, prepare seedbeds, and perform other cemetery maintenance duties.

    Some tasks require moderate physical effort to complete work to include: operating powered grass trimmers and light walking-type lawnmowers; setting up and removing chairs, greens, shelters, and casket-lowering devices from grave sites; cleaning headstones with chemical solutions and brushes. In addition, Caretakers learn how to align and set headstones, dig and square graves, and perform other more difficult cemetery maintenance tasks.

    Caretakers at this level are assigned specific tasks to be done. They perform those assignments with little review or guidance while in progress. Completed work is checked for compliance to standard procedures.

    Caretakers at this level work outside in all kinds of weather and may be exposed to heat, cold, wind, dirt, mud, and water in performance of the duties of this position. When operating vehicles, drives in all types of weather and traffic and is exposed to the possibility of accidents.

    Work at this level requires some arm and leg movement to manipulate equipment controls. Work also requires frequent walking, pushing of cars and wheel barrows, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing, crouching, kneeling, stretching, standing, and recurring lifting and/or carrying of heavy objects in performance of the duties of this position.

    Must have one (1) year recent/relevant experience with the ability to perform the assigned duties of the position in a variety of weather conditions.

    Must have current driver's license and a clean motor vehicle report (MVR).

    Must successfully pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background check.

    Able to effectively read, write, and speak the English language.
