Finding a New Position When You Don't Have Connections

When you network within your industry and make valuable career connections, job opportunities may fall into your lap, even when you're not seeking a new position. When the time does come that you're actively and eagerly searching for a new job, it may seem as though you have no connections at all. Consider these five tips to find a new position when you don't have connections in the industry.

1. Create a List

While you may immediately feel as though there is nobody in you network, this is probably not the case. Make a list of the people that you know, including family, friends, former co-workers, old classmates and neighbors. While these people might not be a direct connection to a new position in your industry, they could be the link to a secondary or tertiary connection that results in success.

2. Make Contact With Those on Your List

After you've created your networking list as a foundation of your job search, reach out to the people on your list. Let each contact know that you're seeking a new position, and inquire whether he knows someone within your desired industry who could be a valuable connection. Check your contacts' LinkedIn profiles to determine whether they know anyone that may help you in your job search.

3. Take Advantage of Social Media

Rely on Facebook and LinkedIn to make new connections. Join groups that are relevant to your desired industry, and make contributions by participating in discussions and making posts. Use search functions to seek out new positions, apply for the job, and attempt to network with people already employed by the company.

4. Increase Your Participation

Attend as many face-to-face networking events as you can fit into your schedule. Attend job fairs, conventions and other events that are related to your desired industry. People who attend these events expect to have conversations, so don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Be sure to keep an upbeat and confident demeanor as you interact.

5. Be Prepared at All Times

An opportunity for a new position or an industry connection may present itself anywhere, so always be prepared. Whether you're hitting the gym, shopping at the grocery store or heading to an industry luncheon, keep a few business cards close at hand. Practice a 30-second elevator speech that lets others know who you are, what position you're looking for and what you can offer to the industry.
