Breakfast is Important - But We Still Aren't Eating It

Did you eat breakfast today? If so, you are one of the few Americans who did. Although there is little debate about how important breakfast is, it seems that less than half of us actually manage to eat a healthy breakfast each morning. An article at Fast Company shared some amazing findings about our breakfast eating habits, and some of them were quite shocking. It seems that while 93% of Americans think that breakfast is the most important meal, only 44% are actually eating it every day.



It made me wonder why, if we all agree that we should, we still don't. Personally, I have had a long standing struggle with breakfast. I'm not much of a morning person, so by the time I feel awake enough to eat, it's almost lunch time. When I worked in an office and had to start work at 6 am, I would grab a cup of coffee and skip the meal. Although I imagined that it would be great to be the sort of person who woke up early and cooked a healthy breakfast for their family before starting the day, I never managed it. Mornings were always too hectic for anything more than a bowl of cereal or a pop tart, both of which aren't good breakfast choices. For the last year, I have made some changes, and breakfast has been one of the best of them. These days, I have a bowl of healthy cereal or some oatmeal before getting my day started. Since I've made the change, I've found that many things in my life have improved. I'm able to be more productive before lunch, I feel healthier and I've lost weight.



Eating a healthy breakfast can do more for you than just weight loss and increased energy. According to research, filling up with healthy foods in the morning can even change the way you think. Take a look at this infographic that break the research down:

 



 



As you can see, there are so many benefits to eating breakfast and no real downside. Why not make a simple change that can improve your whole life.

    @ruth, thanks for the great comment! I have always struggled to try to eat breakfast. Just last month, I made a resolution to get up early and cook breakfast every day. It's made a huge difference in my energy levels and has helped even out my mood, making me more productive. Now that I've gotten into the habit, I don't think I could handle skipping it.Eating mini-meals is a great idea!! I think that is going to be my next change.

    I have always eaten breakfast but didn't always know why; it was just something my mom instilled in me at an early age.  However, as I got older I became more curious about our physical anatomies and learned about the biological aspect of it.  Our bodies are like machines requiring fuel.  Since many of us sleep between six and eight hours a night, we need to replenish our fuel supply.  I not only eat breakfast, I also eat mini-meals throughout the day.  This type of eating pattern prevents blood sugar highs and lows that eating only three meals a day can cause.
