If so keep reading we have just the job for you! The City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Deparment is looking for Camp Directors for the following camps/activities. Applicants will be interviewed and assigned to appropriate camp. • Pre-school/Safety Town Day Camps, children ages 3-7 • Youth Day Camp, children ages 6-11 • Little Champs Sport Camp ages 4-7 • Visit for details on specific camps. Hours of work: Up to 40 hours per week, from mid June - August Number of Positions Open: Three (1) Pre-school/Safety Town, ages 3-7 (1) Youth Camp, ages 6-11 (1) Little Champs Sport Camp, ages 4-7
General Responsibilities
The Camp Dierctor position reports to the Recreation Coordinator. This is a temporary employee position reporting to the Recreation Coordinator in charge of the Day Camp programs. The Day Camp Director is responsible for the supervision and training of a staff of temporary employees and the supervision and safety of participants age 3-11 in the Day Camp program. The primary duties of the Day Camp Director include planning, developing, coordinating, and supervising the weekly day camp activities according to the weekly theme; preparing and maintaining administrative paperwork as directed by the Recreation Coordinator; provide a safe and supervised environment for campers. and providing a high level of customer service for patrons and staff. The Day Camp Director must be able to develop a staff team and work independent of direct supervision. This position needs to be responsible, trustworthy, and able to deal appropriately with staff, the public and difficult situations. The position also supports other recreation programs within the Parks and Recreation Department and will be required to work special events such as Summer Carnival, Music in the Park, and Summer Celebration which may require working split shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Job Functions
• Enforce the rules and policies of the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department regarding the Day Camp Program. • Play and lead a variety of active games and activities with children on a daily basis. • Prevent accidents and injuries, and report any unsafe situations or conditions. • Wear designated uniform on the assigned days. • Provide a high level of customer service for patrons and staff. • Attend scheduled meetings regarding Camp issues. • Provide a safe environment for participants and have the ability to respond quickly to an emergency. • Ability to drive a city vehicle. • Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job. • Other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements
• Previous experience in day camp programs preferred but not required. • Previous experience working with children. • Must be at least 16 years of age. • Have current First Aid and CPR certifications and food handlers permit or able to obtain prior to start of camp. • Experience in leading children in one or more of the following areas; recreational games, arts, crafts, camping, music, drama, or sports. • Must posses and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license. • Must be able to pass a driving record check and a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities
This position works indoors and outdoors with groups of children ranging in age from 3-11 years of age. Must be able to physically play and demonstrate games, work with arts and crafts materials, work outdoors for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather conditions, lift 20-50 lbs., and able to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner.
