Hours of work: Up to 40 hours per week, from June 20th – August 26th (Approx.)
Number of Positions Open: Three (3) Total: (1) Coach (2) Assistants

General Responsibilities

This is a temporary employee position reporting to the Recreation Coordinator. The Tennis Instructor/Coach and Assistant Instructor is responsible for teaching youth 3-12 years of age and adults, the basics to intermediate/advance skills of tennis. This position is responsible for planning of lesson plans, coordinating and scheduling tennis instructor staff, organizing and coordinating equipment and supplies, maintaining administrative paperwork as needed, teaching the skills of the sport, and communicating with parents and caregivers of the students. This position is also responsible for coaching and coordinating the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department Youth Tennis Team, which is part of the Eastside Jr. Tennis League. This position must be able to work independently of staff direction. The position also supports other recreation programs within the Parks and Recreation Department and will be required to work special events such as Summer Carnival, Music in the Park, and Summer Celebration which may require working split shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Job Functions

• Ensure that the public and staff are educated in the rules and policies of the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department and that the staff enforces these rules and policies.
• Plan and organize lesson plans for tennis instruction.
• Provide leadership and direction to other tennis instructors as needed.
• Authorize timesheets of other tennis instructors.
• Maintain and complete assigned reports in a timely manner.
• Prepare Tennis Instructors work schedules.
• Instructing basic to intermediate/advance skills of tennis to youth and adults.
• Coaching and coordinating the Youth Tennis Team.
• Drive to work at various park sites on Mercer Island and for Tennis Team matches.
• Provide a safe environment for class participants and have the ability to respond quickly to any emergencies.
• Prevent accidents and injuries and report any unsafe situations or conditions.
• Must be able to move and carry materials and equipment weighing from 20-50 pounds.
• Interact with the public and parents in a professional manner at all times.
• Must have regular and predictable work attendance to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

• Must have at least 2 years of experience teaching tennis to children and adults
• Must be at least 19 years of age.
• Must have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the game of tennis to teach and coach.
• Must show an ability to work cooperatively with other staff, parents, and participants and be able to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license.
• Must have current First Aid and CPR certifications or be able to obtain prior to instructing.
• Must be able to pass a driving record check and a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act.

Working Conditions & Physical Abilities

Tennis Instructors perform most of their duties outdoors at somewhat remote park locations. Usually, classes are taught on cement/asphalt tennis courts. Must be able to physically play and demonstrate tennis techniques, be able to work outdoors for 4-8 hours in all kinds of weather conditions, be able to lift 20-50 lbs., and be able to respond and react to an emergency situation in an effective manner. May work non-standard workweeks and shifts, to include split shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
